Our Pinot Grigio is a true WA blend with two thirds from our Mt Barker vineyards and one third coming from Margaret River. The season was the earliest on record and we harvested approximately 3 weeks earlier than average, with the fruit still coming in at optimal ripeness and flavour. We always schedule the harvesting at night to capitalise on the cooler overnight temperatures, thus preserving the Pinot Grigio’s delicate fruit characters.

This year’s Rose is our preferred blend of Tempranillo (60%) and Shiraz (40%). Several parcels of fruit were selected for the Rose; some was crushed and pressed with a short time on skins to pick up some colour in the juice. Some riper picked fruit was handled by the ‘Saignee’ method; the juice being drained from the crusher with just a hint of colour and then fermented at ~ 15 C to dryness. We’ve bottled this wine early to maximise all the delicate fruit flavours.

All the Tempranillo fruit is from our Russell Road vineyard which lies in the heart of the Frankland River wine growing district. This is a highly regarded, very reliable region especially for most reds. Being further inland from Mt Barker it has warmer days with more sunshine hours which are then balanced by late, cooling sea breezes and quite cool overnight temperatures, resulting in well coloured and well flavoured fruit.

All this fruit is from our Russell Road vineyard in the super reliable Frankland River region. The 2021 vintage was excellent with no untoward weather events, just the way we like it! With its consistent weather pattern of warm days and cool nights the fruit could ripen fully and develop excellent flavour with no disease risk etc. Traditional winemaking with regular pumpovers during fermentation has ensured maximum colour and flavour extraction. Then, with maturation in French oak barriques for 17 months plus 12 months in bottle, the result is this well balanced and well-integrated wine.
